They finally opened…….yes….I though it would never happen. The weather turned warm then cold and it slowed them down.

Rose Bushes
Back in January I pruned the rose bushes back so they become a thicker bush and produce larger roses. I notice this weather has brought out new shoots of growth in the last week. It won’t be long until I will need to fertilize and let the rain do it’s job.
Spring is coming
Yes, it is and you can always look forward to the early bloomers, to start popping up as soon as the rains and warm sunshine taunt them.
Here is the first of my blooms, the Narcissis, is just getting started and the daffodils are in buds today.
It won’t be long till these pretty yellow buds will pop open and give forth their splendor.

Gardening by the Moon
Understanding effects, and timing your gardening chores accordingly, is a basis of moon gardening. The moon moves in a complete cycle every 29 days. In moon gardening, this cycle is divided in four quarters or phases. Phase refers to the moon’s shape viewed from earth during the month. To plant by moon phases you need an almanac or calendar. It lists exact time and date of the moon phases.
A lunar month starts with a new moon, also called “dark of the moon”. From the new moon to first quarter and from first quarter to full moon, the moon grows to a crescent and then a full circle, mid-month. The increasing or waxing phases.
Increasing Light — New moon to full moon
Examples of garden chores to do by the light of the moon:
(NOTE: General guidelines.
Decreasing or waning phases are when the moon “shrinks” from full moon down to new moon (darkness). As moon wanes during 3rd and 4th quarters, it’s a good time to prune plants, as water table is diminishing and less sap will flows of cut ends. Plants are said to orient themselves to their roots, making this a good time to plant, transplant or harvest root crops. The 4th quarter is most dormant and good for weeding.
- Sow seeds of plants that grow above ground
- Fertilize
- Graft fruit trees
- Plant evergreen and deciduous trees
Decreasing Light — Full moon to dark of the moon
Examples of garden chores to do by the dark of the moon:
(NOTE: These are general guidelines. - Plant bulbs
- Plant crops that grow below the ground, such as potatoes, carrots
- Cultivate weeds
- Plant biennials and perennials because they need strong roots
- Eliminate slugs
- Prune shrubs
How is sowing, transplanting and harvesting linked to phases of the moon? One theory is during the light (waxing) of the Moon, sap is thought to flow more freely, filling plants with vitality and energy, favoring planting and harvesting of crops that mature on top ground. Test validity of gardening by the moon in your garden. Plant crops by the correct moon and others by the wrong moon. Experiment with above ground & below ground crops.
Is This a Cactus?
I’ve got this plant believed to be a cactus. I’m not sure what the thing is, but is sure is weird. It started of with a small piece given to me by a lady, which I rooted and it grew into this.
It has bloomed and the bloom has an order that attracts fly’s. Weird huh? It looks like a star, of something, just what, I can’t imagine.
So, if you have any idea, please let me know what this thing is?

And The Rain Came…….
Wow, what a nice rain. Just what we needed to get those plants and the grass going.
I can’t get into my vegetable garden right now, the mud would go up around my ankles. My plants are looking good though, as if they really got a good drink.
Today the sun is out, and it in the 50’s so, it will be a nice day outside, even if we can’t do much in the yard.
I actually got the cabbage and brussell sprouts in the ground before it rained. I planted some lettuce seeds too. Another week or so and I will see “little lite green specks” popping the ground. I noticed that some of the radish seeds I planted over a month ago have come up, right in with the onions, I planted.
The cat saw to that, with his nosey self, digging around trying to find what I had put there. It will loosen the soil when I pull up the mature radishes. That will give the onions more room to grow, later.
The garden’s coming along, slowly right now, but it’s starting to materialize.

Tangerine Plants
Recently during the holidays, I bought several types of fruit for a fruit salad and fruit bowl. I save several seeds from the tangerine’s I ate and let them dry out. I planted about 5 or 6 seeds in this small pot about 2 to 3 weeks ago and as you can see. I have new plants, bursting the ground. I don’t need but one or two, so when they get larger, I will separate them and transplant them into their own pots.
I’ve never seen these type of plants produce, when sprouted from seeds, but they sure make a nice house plant.
Seed Potatoes
I went to my local feed store yesterday. They usually have a good assortment of veggie’s each year. So, I know to check with them for such things as “seed potatoes”. Since my garden doesn’t have a lot of space, I didn’t buy very many due to the fact you can get several sprouts from one potato. Right now they have a few sprouts, but if left longer, they will sprout more and I will have enough for 2 short rows of potatoes. the potatoes should be planted by the end of
February, while it’s still cool.
I try to plant according to the “Moon’s phases”. My Grandmother, taught me this. It seems that you plant anything that’s grows on top of the ground, during the “new moon”. When it’s starting to grow into a full moon. The crops that produce under the ground, are to be planted when the moon is going down or in last phase after the “full moon”.
You never want to plant anything during the “full moon”, unless it a plant that you want to have beautiful flowers and a healthy plant. This seems to work well and it’s also promoted by the “Farmer’s Almanac“. My Grandmother, swore by it for years, right up to her death. There was always a new one each year, in her home.
