Rains Came

The DFW area has experienced rain the last 3 days that was needed and yet can be a problem. A moderate flooding has been warned, with possibilities of it getting worse. We are glad that the weather is producing rain rather than drought, which we have in recent years had.
The flowers and plants will thrive much better with this slow soaking rain. I fear the sun will come out with fierce rays that burn the new growth. One thing has been nice and that is the fact that this rain didn’t come with bad storms, we so often experience here in the Texas area.

Spring…

Filed under: Flowers, Gardening, Trees — Administrator @ 1:14 pm

It’s finally here, along with all the things we need to do, to get ready for the growing months ahead. I find that it’s harder than I thought, since getting the ground worked is not happening. The weather, here has been rather wet. Just about the time I believe the ground is going to be dry enough to till, it rains again. I’m not being able to get certain crops in the ground because of this.

Moon Planting

Understanding effects, and timing your gardening chores accordingly, is a basis of moon gardening. The moon moves in a complete cycle every 29 days. In moon gardening, this cycle is divided in four quarters or phases. Phase refers to the moon’s shape viewed from earth during the month. To plant by moon phases you need an almanac or calendar. It lists exact time and date of the moon phases. A lunar month starts with a new moon, also called “dark of the moon”. From the new moon to first quarter and from first quarter to full moon, the moon grows to a crescent and then a full circle, mid-month. The increasing or waxing phases.

Getting Ready for Spring

Filed under: Compost, Gardening, Mulch, Other, Planting, Plants, Seeds — Tags: , , , , , — Administrator @ 8:12 pm

It’s time to get ready for the coming spring. Early in the month, turn under clover and other green manure crops in the vegetable garden so that the soil will be ready for planting next month. Even if you haven’t planted a green manure crop, till the garden to expose overwintering insects. If there hasn’t been any rainfall, make sure to water outside plants, especially if there’s freezing weather. They need to be well hydrated.

Water holiday gift plants with care. Check the soil before watering to make sure it is dry and to avoid drowning plants. Allowing these and other houseplants to dry out between watering will help prevent or control fungus gnats.

I’m Not Sure

I had this plant that someone sold to me, and it didn’t have a name. I got tired of it being in the large container, so I planted it in the front yard near the corner of the house. It took off to growing, and I noticed that it really bloomed when it would rain. So, I tried to keep it watered as much as I could. Here, it is showing the pretty purple blooms, which were numerous.

Tomatoes

These are cherry tomatoes, and as yet they are very small. The rain almost ruined them recently. Some are already turning orange. We will see how well they fare.

Coleus

004.JPG  I’m not really sure on how the spelling of this plant is……but it’s a coleus and if it’s supposed to be different, I’m sure there will  be some one who, will tell me.  Either way, it  came up from seed and grew in the flower bed, next to the front porch, last year and then went to seed and one of the seeds came up in this pot.  So, I have a member of the same plant growing for next year’s growth and plants and enjoyment.

Recycled Materials

Filed under: Gardening, Ideas, Other — Administrator @ 2:18 pm

Going green is the national and world theme these days.  Many are trying to help save the environment and keep our world safe for many more years.  They are remodeling the cars to keep down pollution, and many companies are recycling products to keep them out of the landfills. Dolphin Blue is a good source for eco-friendly office supplies. It is the only online source where all products contain recycled materials. You can go online to shop for your green products and find them at reasonable prices.  Most of your paper products can be recycled and used in the production of other items.  Check out this website, for more information, and go green.

Grass…….

Filed under: Gardening, Other — Administrator @ 2:10 pm

Once again the grass has gotten too high, because of the rain we’ve had in the last week or two.  I was told by my son in law that he will make it over this weekend, to get it done.  I will have to watch him close, because he got too close to some of my plants the last time and roughed them up a bit.  My banana plant got the weed eater too close and it went down.  Am just now getting it to put back on a few leaves…….don’t know if it will get large enough to get through the winter this year.  It barely made it last year…..
