Fruit Trees

Filed under: Trees, Planting — Administrator @ 1:00 am

You don’t see many of them these days, and I sure it’s because of the mess the birds make on your cars, when sitting under Mulberry trees. The fruit is sweet and great for sauces but, you must pick them before the birds get to them. There is always a bumper crop, and the size of the fruit(finger nail) makes it hard to get ample for much cooking. So, I guess since my Apricot tree didn’t make it this summer I’ll have to shop for your next year’s tree planting.

Wonderful Rain

Filed under: Planting — Administrator @ 8:54 pm

We’ve had so much wonderful rain lately that I can’t get the guy to till up my garden, because it’s to muddy. I got the last of the left over junk plants and dead stuff mowed down just before it started raining. I really need to get some of the fall veggies planted, but it may be a few days before I can get it done. I should have let him do it before the rain, but I thought the ground was too hard. So, I told him to wait and that he did.

As a houseplant

Avocado tree trained as a houseplant

Avocado tree trained as a houseplant

Avocado can be grown as a houseplant from seed. It can germinate in normal soil in a large pot or by suspending a washed pit (generally using toothpicks embedded in the sides) pointed-side up and filling the glass until the bottom quarter of the pit is covered. The pit will crack as it absorbs water and germinates, and should sprout in 4–6 weeks. When the roots and stem emerge from the seed, it can be planted in soil. The young tree is amenable to pruning and training but will not normally bear fruit indoors without sufficient sunlight and a second plant to cross-pollinate.

An avocado is a fruit and not a vegetable! It is actually a member of the berry family.
At the time of the Spanish conquest, avocados were grown from northern Mexico south through Central America into north-western South America and south in the Andean region as far as Peru (where the avocado had been introduced shortly before the conquest), as well as into the Andean region of Venezuela.

Its monounsaturated fat speeds up the basal metabolic rate, as compared with saturated fat.

Its high fat content makes an overall sound diet more palatable, reducing the temptation to binge on foods high in sugars or saturated fats.

Filed under: Plants, Flowers, Gardening, Seeds, Planting, Other — Administrator @ 3:31 pm

My Vegetables are Growing

I have tomatoes growing……..lol……I can’t wait for fresh tomatoes……

The cabbages are starting to make heads.

I just love fresh vegetables out of the garden, the taste is so different for the store vegetables.  I’m sure you know what I’m taking about if you’ve ever had a home grown garden.

New Hibiscus

Filed under: Plants, Flowers, Gardening, Planting — Administrator @ 9:28 pm

This was given to me by a lady that knows I’m a flower buff, so I need to plant it now that it has gotten a good drink from all the rain. Last year I had several that I had planted but I didn’t get outside to cover them when the frosts and low temperatures, came and they froze. I lost all of them except one, that is native to the Texas weather. 0031.JPG So, I will try to keep this one living and cover it this winter. Right now I’m just going to enjoy it beauty and try to find more of these nice plants, for my yard.   016.JPG

Not wanting it to be by itself, I went and bought another one to put on the other side of the front porch.

Garden Update……..

Filed under: Plants, Gardening, Vegetables, Seeds, Planting, Ideas — Administrator @ 3:08 pm

Remember when I told you about the lettuce not coming up because of the weather, back about 2 months ago?  Well I planted some more last week and the rain we had brought it right up.  001.JPG  I mixed together the “loose leaf” and “romaine”, one will compliment the other.

The potatoes are growing real well, some of them didn’t come up, for whatever reason, but the one’s that did are looking good.  004.JPG

The spinach/mustard is doing well< I just need to get some seven dust to keep the bugs away.

005.JPG  The tomatoes are blooming, so it won’t be long till I can get some green tomatoes to fry………lol  006.JPG

I already have the wire cages on them to contain them and support them in high wind and storms.  Will need to get some new cages, next year, these have just about seen their day.

The Brussels Sprouts are up and growing well.  The cabbage plants are about the same size.   002.JPG  I’m having to fight the cabbage worms, on both.

Recent Flowers

Filed under: Plants, Flowers, Gardening, Planting, Ideas — Administrator @ 5:44 pm

018.JPG I thought you might enjoy seeing some of my spring flowers. This is a white iris, my grandmother, called them “flags”. Where she got that term from, must have been back in the early 1900’s.

016.JPG Last year a lady gave me a Easter lily after it had stopped blooming and I planted the blubs after the plant had died down. It’s coming up, but it won’t be in time for Easter this year. Probably will bloom around May.
