Understanding effects, and timing your gardening chores accordingly, is a basis of moon gardening. The moon moves in a complete cycle every 29 days. In moon gardening, this cycle is divided in four quarters or phases. Phase refers to the moon’s shape viewed from earth during the month. To plant by moon phases you need an almanac or calendar. It lists exact time and date of the moon phases. A lunar month starts with a new moon, also called “dark of the moon”. From the new moon to first quarter and from first quarter to full moon, the moon grows to a crescent and then a full circle, mid-month. The increasing or waxing phases.

Getting Ready for Spring

It’s time to get ready for the coming spring. Early in the month, turn under clover and other green manure crops in the vegetable garden so that the soil will be ready for planting next month. Even if you haven’t planted a green manure crop, till the garden to expose overwintering insects. If there hasn’t been any rainfall, make sure to water outside plants, especially if there’s freezing weather. They need to be well hydrated.

Water holiday gift plants with care. Check the soil before watering to make sure it is dry and to avoid drowning plants. Allowing these and other houseplants to dry out between watering will help prevent or control fungus gnats.

Yucca Plant

When I was moving from my house to an apartment, I paused for a moment to notice the beautiful blooms on the yucca plant, next to the back corner. As you can see it was blooming. It doesn’t bloom every year, only when there’s been plenty of rain or I had watered the yard well. During drought years it wouldn’t bloom. I suppose it was because of the lack of moisture.

I’m Not Sure

I had this plant that someone sold to me, and it didn’t have a name. I got tired of it being in the large container, so I planted it in the front yard near the corner of the house. It took off to growing, and I noticed that it really bloomed when it would rain. So, I tried to keep it watered as much as I could. Here, it is showing the pretty purple blooms, which were numerous.
